Ho'opono Pono Ke Ala: The Living Pathof Self-Acceptance

Updated: 1 day ago

Welcome, Dear One. If you are a woman in midlife or beyond, you are in the right place. You are reading the 3rd Episode in Finding Your Way When Everything Is Changing — a Heart of Aloha Blog Series.

I'm Kumu Kaleo Wheeler, a Spiritual Teacher, Voice Medicine Guide, Speaker/Storyteller, and keeper of the ancient Hawaiian lineage of Aloha Lōkahi.

This written series is the companion to my Heart of Aloha Podcast, Her Voice Rising: Trust Your Inner Knowing, where these same teachings are spoken aloud. If you prefer to listen to this specific message, you can listen to the full audio for Episode 3 here: https://kaleowheeler1.substack.com/podcast

You can also watch the companion YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/NQoDsUF77Dw

This series is for the woman who can feel she's standing in two thresholds at once — your own personal one, stepping into this wise-woman season of your life, and the whole world's, moving through its own massive transformation right alongside you. If that's where you are, Dear One, you are exactly in the right place.

In our last post, we sat together in Aloha Lōkahi — remembering that love and unity that has always lived within you, your Mana Iho. Today, we take the next step: Hoʻopono Pono Ke Ala, the living path to self-acceptance.

You might have heard a modern variation of the word Hoʻoponopono, adapted in the Western world as a method for conflict resolution or seeking forgiveness. My beloved teacher, Kumu Mahealani Kuamoʻo Henry, a Kanaka Maoli — a Native Hawaiian — carried the original truth, kept safe and protected in her family lineage for generations, until now, when it is so needed. Living Aloha Lōkahi, with the practice of Hoʻopono Pono Ke Ala — making the path that is right, more right — is not about fixing a broken vessel. It is about accepting your own innate perfection — your Spirit Greatness.

Auntie used to say it this way: "There is only one of you... made in the likeness and image of God. And there is no need to duplicate you. That means no one can be compared to you." And then she'd laugh and say — that's the cosmic joke, that we spend our lives comparing ourselves to so-and-so, when there is no other. How can the one and only you possibly be compared to anyone?

Hoʻopono Pono Ke Ala is the practice of living that truth. Simply put, it is remembering that you are a spiritual being who chose to come into this human experience, to grow and evolve even more into your own greatness — through your relationships with others, with nature, and with the world around you. And sometimes, that means finding yourself in conflict as part of the path.

We call that conflict pilikia. And I want you to hear this deeply: pilikia is not something you've done wrong. It's simply a spiritual lesson, an opportunity to reflect and choose your next step. You can stay stuck in the emotional muck of it — or you can choose your way back to peace, back to your Mana Iho, your own inner authority and truth.

But how, Dear One, when that old voice of self-doubt and blame comes rushing in? It comes down to two things.

First, the power of choice. We live in a world of duality — light and dark, warm and cold, pono and pilikia — and the choice of which one you live in has always belonged to you.

Second, and this is the heart of it: self-permission. We've been taught our whole lives to wait for someone else to give us permission — a parent, a teacher, a therapist, a partner— to validate us. How is that working for you? Especially now, in a world so uncertain that no one seems to have the answers anymore. This is the threshold we're in — it's time to stop waiting, and start giving yourself that permission instead.

Self-permission isn't about which action you take. Sometimes it means saying no and walking away, because staying would only shrink you further into self-doubt. And sometimes it means staying, and finding your way through with honesty and truth. Either way, it's the same thing: giving yourself permission to speak your truth, and trusting yourself to take the action that's actually needed.

This is why these ancient teachings exist — Mana Iho, your own spiritual empowerment; Koho Mana, the power of choice always yours to make between pono and pilikia; and Na Kupuna Alakaʻina — when something feels too heavy for your human mind to carry alone, you release it upward, to your ancestors, to whatever you call your Higher Power, and let yourself feel the relief of being held.

A Practice to Carry With You

This week, whenever pilikia shows up, pause. Place one hand on your heart, and one over your navel. Breathe deep. And give yourself absolute permission to step out of the drama. Let your own inner knowing speak instead, and use your Voice Medicine to state this truth: "Uhane Nui Au I Ka Pono Mea" — I am Spirit Greatness, in this right time, right space, right being. Everything is in perfect order.

And then, let that truth guide you. Ask yourself: knowing this, what do I actually need to do right now — speak up, stay, walk away, or simply breathe and wait? Trust the answer that comes. And take that one small step, from your own pono, not from fear.

A Closing Gift: The ʻĀpono Card

As we come to the end of our time together today, I want to leave you with a teaching directly from the Pono Cards created by my beloved teacher, Kumu Mahealani Kuamoʻo Henry. This one is ʻĀpono — acceptance:

"Acceptance of pono is the most effective way to stop the manaʻo — the mind — and the puʻuwai — the emotions — from running in pilikia. Choose now to accept pono, and when you do, you place in motion the acceptance for experiencing your highest good. Accept now that it is unacceptable to waste your precious moments in pilikia."

Looking Ahead

In our next talk story, Episode 4, we will open the third key of the Heart of Aloha System: Kānāwai Moakaʻaka — the Hawaiian Smiling Law of Attraction and Manifestation. Now that you have given yourself permission to step out of the drama, we will explore how to make your mind a beautiful helpmate, rather than letting it slip back into old conditioning. Join me as we discover how to consciously bring what you do want into your life, allowing the Universe to smilingly serve you with 'Yeses'.

I also warmly invite you to step into our free community space, The Heart of Aloha ʻOhana. We are not meant to walk this threshold alone, and this group is a beautiful, safe gathering place where we can stay connected, talk story, and walk this path together. You can find the link to join us in the show notes, or by visiting theheartofaloha.com to explore all of our other offerings.

And if you find yourself sitting with a piece of pilikia today, and longing for some personal support, I invite you to schedule a gentle, one-on-one Heart of Aloha Compass Session.

Please know the door is always open.

Mahalo, dear one. For saying yes to yourself and being here today.

A Hui Hou (until next time).

Me Ke Aloha Mau Loa.

I am Kumu Kaleo.
